Easy Scent Games for Dogs at Home: Start With a Simple Find-It

Scent games let a dog use their nose in a low-pressure way. Begin with a few pieces of your dog’s normal food in an easy-to-see location and invite them to find it. Keep the first game short so your dog can succeed and stop while they are still interested.

Make the search gradually harder

Once your dog understands the game, hide a few pieces behind a chair leg or in a snuffle mat made for dogs. Supervise closely, especially if your dog chews fabric or swallows non-food objects. Use only food that fits your dog’s diet, and count treats as part of the daily amount.

Keep dogs safe around shared food

Play separately if dogs compete or guard food. Put away the mat when the activity is over, and avoid small objects that could be swallowed. Choose a quiet area where your dog can search without being crowded.

Every dog has different preferences. If searching creates frustration or guarding, simplify the activity or ask your veterinarian or a qualified behavior professional for help.
