Road Trip With a Dog: A Practical Pre-Drive Checklist

A successful road trip with a dog starts before the car moves. Confirm that your destination welcomes dogs, check local leash rules, and make sure identification details are current. If your dog is not comfortable in the car, ask your veterinarian about a gradual acclimation plan well before travel day.

Pack familiar essentials

Bring your dog’s food, water, bowls, leash, harness, waste bags, familiar bedding, medications, and vaccination or health records. Keep a recent photo and your veterinarian’s contact details accessible. Pack extra water and plan stops where your dog can toilet and stretch safely on leash.

Secure every ride

Use a crash-tested travel restraint or properly secured carrier suited to your dog and vehicle. Do not allow a dog to ride loose or in the front seat with an active airbag. Never leave a dog unattended in a parked vehicle; interior temperatures can become dangerous quickly.

See the ASPCA’s road-trip planning tips and our vet-visit checklist before travel. If warm weather is expected, review the AVMA warm-weather safety guidance.

Keep the first outing short and positive. A flexible plan, familiar routines, and safe breaks make travel easier for people and dogs.

Travel needs vary by dog and destination. Ask your veterinarian about medical or motion-sickness concerns.
