Dog Wellness Visit Checklist: What to Track Before the Vet

A routine veterinary visit is a chance to discuss your dog’s health, behavior, and changing needs. A little preparation helps you remember details and gives the veterinary team a clearer picture of your dog’s everyday life. The right schedule and preventive plan vary by age, health, lifestyle, and location, so use the visit to make decisions together.

Bring a short health record

Write down current food and treats, medications and supplements, appetite or thirst changes, stool or urination changes, mobility, sleep, and any new behavior. Note when a concern started and whether it is getting better or worse. Short videos can help show an intermittent cough, gait change, or behavior that may not happen in the clinic.

Prepare questions in priority order

List your top two or three concerns first. Ask which vaccines, parasite prevention, dental checks, nutrition, and exercise plan fit your dog. Bring previous records if your dog recently changed clinics, and ask when the next follow-up should happen.

The AVMA pet-care resources explain why pet owners and veterinarians work as a team. For everyday routines, see our dog daily-routine guide and Dog Care resources.

After the appointment

Save the care plan, note any recheck dates, and contact the clinic if instructions are unclear. Do not start human medication or change a prescribed treatment without veterinary guidance.
